17th-century Old Master engraving traditionally attributed to Flemish painter and engraver Wilhelm (Willem) Panneels, circa 1600–1630s.
The engraving depicts Christ crowned with thorns being presented before a gathered crowd, with a Latin inscription below the image.
An early handwritten collector’s note affixed to the reverse identifies the artist as Wm. Panneels and describes him as a Flemish painter and engraver born in Antwerp around 1600 and associated with the circle of Rubens.
The plate itself bears the inscription “Her. Panneels fecit.” Because of this discrepancy, the work is being offered as attributed to Wilhelm/Willem Panneels, with the historical attribution retained from the collector’s note. Further scholarly research may be warranted.
Presented in an older gilt frame measuring approximately 8 x 9 inches overall.
The engraving shows significant age-related toning, foxing and discoloration consistent with an early work on paper. It has not been removed from the frame for examination. Please review all photographs carefully.
