1783 \"Washington & Independence\" Large Bust copper token, cent or half cent (value varied by state), authenticated / graded / encapsulated by NGC as Very Fine, VF-25. These copper tokens, used readily as coinage in the new U.S., are among the \"Washington pieces\" struck in the wake of the peace treaty ending the Revolutionary War and ushering in a new era of the young Constitutional country. We list this coin as originating in the U.S., but indeed, though records are scarce to know for sure, many if not most were minted in the U.K. and shipped to America. The story of the American Revolution, and the U.S. Army Commanding General who did not seize nor keep his dominant power in the country, but instead resigned and returned home, resonated with the British people. Even George III remarked at war\'s end that if Washington went home instead of remaining as the country\'s Generalissimo, \"he will be the greatest man in the world.\" Washington did just that - until he was pried loose by colleagues to preside over the 1787 constitutional convention and then accept election to be our first President starting in 1789.
