Burnet, chaplain to King William III and Master of the Charterhouse, had argued that the Earth began as a smooth, hollow sphere filled with water, which burst forth at the time of Noah\'s Flood to create mountains and oceans. Warren attacked this as incompatible with Scripture, and this work is Burnet\'s point-by-point rebuttal, chapter by chapter, covering topics including the formation of the Earth, the role of the Moon in tidal fluctuation, the shape of the globe, the origin of mountains, and the correct interpretation of biblical language on natural phenomena. The text concludes with a sharp dismissal of Warren\'s scholarship. Isaac Newton was among those who admired Burnet\'s theological approach to geological questions, and the broader debate this pamphlet belongs to was a landmark moment in the early history of geology and the relationship between science and religion.
