Soft Tone
Soft tone needles produce a low, warm sound – good for a soft listening experience and also are best for acoustically recorded records that are worn or scratched, helping to reduce surface noise.
Soft Tone needles are also recommended to play back later 78rpm records (post 1935) because the records have less grit and are often made of a softer material, so will wear quicker. In addition, because they are electrically recorded, they are much louder, so the need for a loud needle is not necessary.
Medium Tone
Medium-tone needles are designed to work with a wide range of phonographs, and records, including those from different manufacturers and eras. These offers a true-tone and slightly louder tone than a soft-tone needle and makes them more universal for listening.
Loud Tone
Loud tone needles are used any time you want more volume from your record. These are best used with earlier (pre1920) records.As always, we recommend you change your needle every 1-2 records. 78rpm shellac records were made with a bit of grit, so as to wear down the needles, rather than the record.
