*************** Mid Century Cochiti Pottery Owl, Unsigned Polychrome, ca. 1940 ****************
Here we have a very whimsical Cochiti pottery owl from around 1940. The potter obviously wanted this figure to appear cute and therefore saleable to the tourists visiting the American Southwest in the middle of the 20th century. Executed in the typical buff colored slip with black details, the owl has upturned eyes and whiskers! The painted decoration is finely done, with great detail and well-balanced features. There are 2 air holes on either side of the owls beak, and a third one on the bottom of the piece. The rich overall patina suggests the 1940 estimated date of production.
There is one tiny loss of paint on the owl's right ear, otherwise this piece is in perfect condition.
This pottery owl is approximately 5" high and 3" wide.
