(1889) New York NY-NY 245wm Photographic Times Merchant Token Rare. Made by Scovill engraver Camille L Chapelle of Waterbury CT. Holed, but typical for issue. Ef Au. Plain Edge, 48mm, White Metal.
A published research on this exact medal attributes the engraving/design to C. L. Chapelle. The surviving examples have been described as signed “C.L. CHAPELLE SC” at the truncation of Daguerre’s bust; “SC” is the traditional abbreviation for sculpsit (“engraved by”). The Smithsonian also holds a plaster trial piece for this same medal, made in 1889 by Scovill.
Camille L. Chapelle, a professional engraver and die-sinker in Waterbury, and he was associated with Scovill Manufacturing Co.
* An 1881 Waterbury city directory lists “Chapelle Camille L., engraver and die sinker,” living at 3 Cherry.
* The Mariners’ Museum specifically identifies Camille L. Chapelle as the engraver of Scovill-made button dies and records the mark “C.L. CHAPELLE / WATERBURY CONN.”
* The museum says Chapelle was listed in Waterbury directories from 1895 through 1922, and describes him as the cutter of numerous Scovill button dies.
* A 1895 Mechanics’ Fair medal is attributed to Camille L. Chapelle, with the tiny “C.L.C.” signature, and is described as struck by Scovill Manufacturing Company.
* Another important example is the 1889 Daguerre photographic medal, signed “C.L. CHAPELLE SC.”
